Meyer Partners with AMC Theaters to Usher in a New Era of Cinema Magic
Introduction/Overview

In the ever-evolving world of cinema, the technology behind the scenes is crucial to enhancing the audience experience. North American ticket sales have been on a decline since 2002, however, the COVID-19 catalyst pushed moviegoers out of theatres faster than ever before. In 2023 ticket sales were still 32% lower than those in 2019.

“For the last two years as AMC has navigated its way through the pandemic, we have done so not only with the intention of survival, but with an eye to the future of moviegoing and continuing to enhance the guest experience at our theatres,” said Adam Aron, chairman and CEO of AMC.

With that in mind, AMC Theaters embarked on a groundbreaking project in 2022 to upgrade their projection systems across 3,500 auditoriums nationwide. This initiative, known as “Laser at AMC,” aims to revolutionize on-screen presentation with cutting-edge laser projectors, affirming AMC’s commitment to providing a premium theatrical experience and investing in the future of movie-going.

However, as AMC updated its technology, a pressing question arose: What should be done with the old projectors that delivered countless hours of entertainment? Thanks to our partnership in the Office Moving Alliance (OMA) with Chipman Relocation & Logistics, Meyer had the opportunity to step in and assist in this transformation.

The Challenge

Meyer faced the unique challenge of managing the transition of legacy equipment. The task was not just about moving or shipping equipment but honoring the legacy of these devices and ensuring they continued to serve their purpose. Each projector, some of which had been in use for years, had its own history and significance.  Meyer faced the unique challenge of managing the transition of legacy equipment. Each projector, some of which had been in use for years, had its own history and significance.

The Solution

Meyer’s approach was methodical and thoughtful and focused on two key areas of success:

  1. Detailed Planning: Meyer worked with AMC and devised a detailed plan for decommissioning and relocating the old projectors. This required coordination on a regional and local level for each theatre to ensure the appropriate allocation of labor and resources and to ensure minimal disruption to their operations.
  2. Legacy Care: Each projector was carefully prepared for its next chapter. Some projectors, produced by Sony in the 2010’s, were the last of their kind. After Sony announced they would leave the Cinema industry in 2020, the existing projectors and their parts became much more valuable for future use and repairs. Though most projectors were decommissioned and sent for retirement, others were packed and sent to Texas or Kansas, ready to continue their story.
Meyer’s Impact

The partnership between Meyer and AMC not only facilitated the smooth transition of old projectors but also contributed to AMC’s broader goal of enhancing the movie-going experience. By managing the removal and redistribution of legacy equipment, Meyer played a crucial role in enabling AMC to implement their state-of-the-art laser projectors, thereby elevating the cinematic experience for moviegoers across the country.

This project exemplifies Meyer’s commitment to not just facilitating change but celebrating it. By handling the old equipment with care and precision, Meyer helped ensure that AMC’s transition to new technology was both seamless and respectful of the past. As AMC continues to innovate and deliver extraordinary movie experiences, Meyer remains proud to have supported this significant transformation.
