Client:
Boston Dynamics
To help Boston Dynamics prepare its new facility for the customer demonstration and ultimately, complete the entire move, the Meyer team delivered many of its core Workplace Solutions offerings.
Introduction/Overview
Boston Dynamics is a “world leader in mobile robots,” and was spun out of MIT in recent years to bring its legged robots to industry to handle “dull, dirty and dangerous” tasks safely and to “navigate tough unstructured, unknown or antagonistic terrain with ease.” As the company continues to grow, it needed to move from two major and two minor locations totaling 77,000 square feet into one new, state-of-the-art facility of 180,000 square feet. After a thorough RFP process, Meyer was hired to manage this large and high stakes move.
The Challenge

While the Boston Dynamics team has an amazing array of technical talents, they had not managed a move of this magnitude before. Not only was the move at a large scale, but the cargo included extremely valuable and sensitive intellectual property, technology, inventory and much more.

Adding to the challenge was the fact that Covid-19 shut down construction of the new facility for weeks and Boston Dynamics had a large client flying in from around the globe to view progress on a new line of robotics. This product demonstration required that parts of the new facility be up and running on a tight timeline, and the Meyer team had to innovate solutions in real time as the facility was only partially completed.

The Solution

To help Boston Dynamics prepare its new facility for the customer demonstration and ultimately, complete the entire move, the Meyer team delivered many of its core Workplace Solutions, including:

  • Partnering with a move management expert to develop a full project plan to execute this technically demanding move
  • Planning and moving 40 tractor trailer loads of content, including 37,000 cubic feet of heavy industrial items and equipment
  • Metal fabrication of custom caging solutions to enable robot testing and containment as well as a mock-up of a catwalk system (see photos) to run mobility exercises showcasing how the robots can perform in the dangerous oil rig environment
  • Developing and executing a chain of custody system with sealed transportation trailers and client signoffs at each step to secure the moving of valuable materials and intellectual property
  • Innovating solutions to accommodate the move into a partially complete facility – flexing the schedule into phases to meet priority objectives, manually unloading and organizing cargo as the new loading dock was incomplete, navigating access challenges and adding manpower as needed to meet the aggressive timeline

“The Meyer team helped us successfully complete the largest move in our company’s history and fabricate key elements of our new facility on an aggressive timeline,” said Kelly Chilson, Manager of Office Operations for Boston Dynamics. “They securely transported our valuable inventory and sensitive intellectual property, helped ensure our new facility was functional quickly, and provided outstanding service. We look forward to working with Meyer again soon.”

Meyer’s Impact
Boston Dynamics successfully conducted their key client demonstration on time, with their high-value inventory, technology and intellectual property safely installed in their new facility. Despite the added stresses of completing this move during the Covid-19 pandemic and with the associated facilities challenges, the Meyer team delivered its customary level of outstanding service and is already working on next jobs and future opportunities with Boston Dynamics.
