The Discovery Science Center and Planetarium in Bridgeport, Connecticut is on a mission to ignite curiosity and fuel a lifelong love of learning. This dynamic non-profit achieves this by delivering exhilarating, hands-on experiences in STEAM education and constantly rotating its interactive traveling exhibits to provide new thrills.
Originally designed and produced by Evergreen Exhibitions in collaboration with the National Institute of Health, recent exhibit BRAIN: The World Inside Your Head offered visitors a virtual reality “brain cruise” and featured giant 3-D neuron displays — even a section featuring real, preserved brains. Safely packing and relocating such a unique and delicate exhibit was no small feat.
The Discovery Museum needed to remove its popular brain exhibit to make way for a brand-new attraction. The exhibit included oversized, delicate components spread across two floors of the museum — some of which required specialized equipment and handling to move safely.
To add to the complexity, the elevator was unexpectedly out of service on move day, making it even more critical to have a team capable of using their own brainpower to adapt quickly and safely to the changed conditions. The museum needed a trusted partner who could navigate the obstacles, protect the integrity of the exhibit, and complete the move quickly, efficiently, and with exceptional care.
Meyer deployed a team of specialists to handle every facet of the move. Our commercial relocation team began by carefully packing fragile, interactive display pieces, ensuring every item was protected for safe transport.
For the larger, oversized components on the second floor, our rigging team had already planned to use a forklift to safely lower them to the first floor of the Center. However, with the elevator now out of service on move day, the rigging crew expanded their forklift operations to move even more of the exhibit than originally planned. Our commercial movers also stepped in with muscle and precision to carefully stair-carry smaller and mid-sized pieces.
